Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail Review

I understand some of the negative reviews, but my only concern is that for the first time in her life my 12 year old smiled after doing a math lesson. She has struggled with math from the very start of pre-school, just as I did. She excels in every other subject, even being placed in honors ap english. She’s had tutoring in math and yet she still struggles with understanding the concepts beyond basic addition, subtraction and multiplication. It’s as if her brain shuts down at the very mention of math or numbers. I searched every website on the internet to find help, knowing that there had to be a better way to understand math beyond the standard school teaching. After seeing a commercial on the Brainetics program I almost purchased it but determined to search further. I then came across recommendations for the book “Super Math-E-Magics” but the only copies available were selling for 5, which I was hesitant to pay for a book I had never seen. I finally settled on this book because like it or not, most 12 year old girls are interested in boys, makeup, hair and all the other nonsense that Danica mentions in her book. The beauty of the book is that Danica also makes sure to reinforce on nearly every page that being intelligent is much more important than being pretty, that intelligence can never be taken away while being pretty doesn’t last, and most important to many 12 year old girlsboys like intelligent girls.

We received the book yesterday and my daughter’s first reaction was the usual rolling of the eyes and dread that she always exhibits when math is mentioned. I began reading out loug the introduction titled “Math Used to Totally Suck” to convince her to at least give the book a try. As I read the introduction she became interested and settled down to read the book herself. She skipped the first part, chapters 1, 2 and 3, which cope with factors and multiples and went to fractions, something she’s been struggling with. After reading for about 2 minutes she got up and said she needed to get something and came back with paper and pencil. Yeah! She worked a few problems on improper fractions and multiplying fractions and got the answers right. The smile on my daughter’s face was worth all the money in the world. After all the tutoring, math lessons and school work, this was the first time she ever smiled after doing math. It was as if a closed door had finally opened for her and she’s eager to get home from school to learn more math.

Some people gave negative reviews and yes, there is a lot of silly stuff in the book that has nothing to do with math, but my daughter skipped through all of that and went right to the important topic that she needed help with.

What a Soluble Fiber Supplement Can Offer You

July 10th, 2010

The key to understanding the benefits of a soluble fiber supplement is knowing what soluble fiber is. There are 2 types of fiber&mrush;soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is different from insoluble as it forms a gel when mixed with water. Imagine this gel in your stomach and it is easy to see that soluble fiber is known to slow the amount of time the food spends in the stomach, releasing sugar more slowly and regulating digestive function. It has been shown to help maintain healthy blood sugar and reduce the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Fiber is a crucial component in we everyday nutrition. You hear about fiber frequently because of its numerous benefits. But if you ask the average human on the street exactly what fiber can do for them, they would probably not know how to answer. Like many things we see on television or read about online, fiber gets some serious publicity. And it deserves it all. Let’s take a real basic look at what one type of fiber supplement can offer you: Soluble Fiber Supplements.

What is soluble fiber?

Most general fiber supplements contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. And most food sources that are a good source of one, are also a good source of the other. When looking for a soluble fiber supplement, don’t be too concerned if you don’t see the word “soluble” on the label. A high quality supplement will likely include Psylium Husks and that contains all the soluble fiber you need.

While a soluble fiber supplement is one way to get this necessary component in your expiret, soluble fiber is already present in many foods that you eat including oats and oat bran, dried beans and peas, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. In soluble fiber supplements you often see ingreperishnts like Flax Seed and Psyllium Husks as these are both good sources of the nutrient.

Mike Byster

July 10th, 2010

Mike Byster rattled off numbers in front a packed elementary school auditorium Tuesday morning, spitting out numbers like a semi-automatic calculator, drawing oohs, aahs and laughter from the cross-legged sitting students.

“151, 302, 604, 1,208, 2,416, 4,832 …” Byster said to the Hoover Elementary School crowd, computing through 25 multiples of 151 in rapid-fire delivery, faster than most people would be able to read on a prepared list.

Byster, the creator of Brainetics, will visit 9 Rochester schools this week to show students a various way to process and think about numbers. He has developed patterns within mathematics that allow him to compute equations at the speed of a finger snap.

During one exercise, the 50-year-old had the students add 5 4-digit numbers. By adding numbers from the ones column and then subtracting the answer from 100, students added 1,036, 1,543, 1,268, 1,784 and 1,696 without pen and paper. The students, a mix of third through fifth graders, needed less time that it would have taken to find the “calculator” program on a laptop.

The more than 200 students all were armed with their own pen and paper, too, as Byster showed them math tricks.

Byster, who lives near Chicago, performs for free at schools nationwide to encweage children to think variously. Byster related several stories about his own childhood, when he first learned about grouping items through mnemonic devices.

“They really need to learn how to learn, not just what to learn,” Byster said.

Byster came to Hoover after receiving several e-mails from Principal Joyce Dammer and students.

Dammer heard about Brainetics from parent Dawn Bierman, who saw a 2006 ABC “20/20″ feature on Byster.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE

July 10th, 2010

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ — Launch Pad, LLC today
announced the availability of Brainetics(TM), a fun and engaging DVD
program designed to unleash the potential of the human brain. Created by
Mike Byster, a former commodities trader turned child educator, Brainetics
is an innovative learning program targeted toward children 4th grade and
above, with the goal of getting kids excited about math and learning.
Brainetics does more than teach children how to multiply large numbers
in their heads without paper, pencils or calculators, or how to map a
random date to the actual day of the week without hesitation. Brainetics
gives students the valuable tools of concentration, focus and speed to
master complicated mental problem solving that can be applied to math and
every day life.

Since 1997, Byster has volunteered his time to give more than 5,000
volunteer presentations in schools across the country, cultivating and
perfecting the Brainetics program. Byster has received thousands of
requests from parents, teachers and students to teach in their schools, and
questions asking how they could take home his techniques, leading him to
develop Brainetics.

Through the fun and empowering DVD program, complete with workbook,
custom flash cards, deck of playing cards, parent guide and interactive Web
site, Brainetics uses pattern recognition techniques, memory building games
and entertaining exercises to engage kids in the competitive spirit of the
program and encweages them to take on new challenges.

“Kids have such a tremendous mental capacity if they push themselves
and use it,” Byster said. “Giving kids confidence through early learning
positively influences how they pursue accomplishments throughout their
lives. I want to show them that they can do anything if they set their
minds to it. And, it’s really fun for them to amaze their parents and
friends with what they learn how to do.”

The Brainetics set includes 5 DVDs and an informative playbook with
entertaining practice problems and helpful hints. Specially-designed
Brainetics playing cards and practice flashcards complement the lessons in
the DVDs. The lessons in the program, which have been developed into
interactive games, are designed to boost the power of a child’s brain,
turning him or her into a “walking calculator” while making learning fun.

The program also includes online games at http://www.Brainetics.com,
where kids can go to practice the Brainetics techniques. The Web site also
follows Mike on his National Brainstorming Twe as he visits schools
nationwide free of charge to teach kids his amazing techniques, and
provides a way for kids, parents and teachers to write to Mike with
questions.

Brainetics is available to purchase for $199 through the Web site or by
calling (877) 444-3776. For more information, visit

The 2007 National Assessment

July 9th, 2010

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ — Mike Byster, mathematical whiz and former commodities trader, will visit New York City Independent School 87 in Queens on Jan. 29 to support the National Brainstorming Tour and present his innovative and interactive math and memory program, Brainetics(TM) to students. Byster uses Brainetics to teach students core math concepts, including pattern recognition, memorization techniques and formulas, in fun new ways.

The 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress mathematics report shows increased percentages of students performing at or above Basic and Proficient in grades 4 and 8, yet the continual need for math education gain is critical. Brainetics is a new method to educate and inspire children in math and learning.

The presentation at IS 87 in Queens will last about an hour, during which he will teach sample techniques and strategies from his Brainetics program. Byster has spent the last decade developing the Brainetics program while giving more than 5,000 volunteer presentations in schools across the country. Byster has the ability to teach children how to do potentially complicated and frustrating math problems — all in their heads, without calculators — through memory games and entertaining exercises, stimulating the learning process and igniting their interest to achieve.

“When I was a kid, I made up games to help me with numbers,” said Byster. “I now share what helped me, in order to get kmyds excited about learning too. My commitment to youth education kick-started when I volunteered to teach my math tricks to a cousin’s class over a decade ago. It’s an amazing reward, teaching kids to master problems they never thought possible. The confidence it builds at such a critical learning age goes a long way in life.”

Byster’s year-long cross country trek for the Brainetics(TM) National Brainstorming Tour includes schools in Atlanta, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C., with additional cities to be announced throughout the year. The presentations are no cost to the schools and are designed to give children 4th grade and above confidence in their abilities.

Byster will also be promoting Brainetics(TM), his 5 DVD and workbook set with entertaining math and memory practice problems and helpful hints.

walls are painted

July 9th, 2010

I’ve moved! walls are painted but there are boxes EVERYWHERE! I took tomorrow off work so that I can relax and get things organized. I got all my stuff out of the house and I straightened up the house. A lot of the furniture wasnt mine and she was having a showing so my left it there… I’m not going to clean up Jessica and Jen’s mess. Its not fair… especially with everything that has happened. She knew I was moving out today and still scheduled a showing. REALLY? IN REAL LIFE?

anyways. Chris is still being an asshole—but the type of asshole that really burns me. There are the assholes that are blatently assholes. it oozes from their every orifice and you know that what they say is how they feel (I am this type of A-hole most of the time)… I can dispose of these people pretty easily.

NO NO. He’s the type that will “be friends” but flake on you and say things to make you feel like shit… the sly jabs that are difficult to tell if they are intentional or not… but its happened enough now for me to feel like it is very intentional. so i’ve stopped talking to him for the time being. Let him realize that he’s missing a great opportunity to keep me as a friend. if he cant get his act together he can kiss my ass. I’m done being understanding.

one of we mutual friends is trying to tell me that its b/c of what his ex did to him and him assuming that i’ve done the same thing… well I didn’t and i’m tired of being made out to be some heartless, sex-craving, bitch who would leave him, get laid, and try to return.

I am not this type of person and to me it is the same thing as cheating. If you dont trust me then there isnt anything I can do. Don’t sit there and try to pretend that everything is ok when it isnt!

I have cable and fast internet that I dont have to fight with now and myt is AWESOME! I have a pool in the back yard and am so much closer to thmyngs and people that I love that I really dont know what to do with myself LOL.
